J'aime Rodarte

MAGAZINE TIME / A MAGAZINE CURATED BY RODARTE
. . . .

It only took something crazy like 5 months for me to get my hands on A Magazine Curated by Rodarte. Oh, Canada... it's as if I live in Ittoqqortoormitt.  Favorites from the magazine's pages have to be the Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst editorials, the hilarious Garbage Pail Kids (yes, I used to collect them all) and the whack attack stills from the Wizard of Oz, Jaws and a few random zombie movies. Printed on uncoated paper stock with an embossed cover equals design heaven. So for those who didn't get to check out this beautiful magazine, here's a few tid bits to enjoy.

. . . .
Californian designers Kate & Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte weave a vibrant tapestry of natural and built environments, featuring inspiring landscapes and the characters that inhabit those worlds – with artistic contributions from contemporary talents such as Jay DeFeo, John Baldessari and Joss Whedon. The issue includes two exclusively commissioned editorials, featuring Kirsten Dunst in their FW/11 collection photographed by David Armstrong and Elle Fanning in their SS/ 12 couture collection photographed by Bill Owens.

Cut and Paste

CUTTING EDGES
. . . .

Remember the TV show, Reading Rainbow? Sure you do! Consider this blog post my homage to LeVar Burton and public television. We got a bunch of incredible books in our studio the other day. JACKPOT! So I spent the weekend checking out Cutting Edges, the contemporary collage. So. Much. Good. Stuff.  Like Valerie Roybal's  found paper art and Alejandra Villasmil's insanely crazy/cool portraits. Suddenly I have the urge to cut, paste and decoupage. Did someone say craft project? PS how much do we love the cover of this book? Diamonds and triangles! YES!

ART HISTORY So yeah about collage. Back in the day, art movements like Dada, Constructivism and Surrealism really embraced the technique. But get this, word on the street is collage has been around since the invention of paper in China around 200 BC. Yup, it's that old. But the term collage, which is rooted in the french word for glue (aka colle), was first coined by Picasso and Braque in the 20th century. So there you go. Coles Notes.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Gentlemen's Quarterly meets the Gentlemen's Boutique.
ZZ Top knew what they were talking about. It's true. Don't let the hill billy beards fool you because with a clean shirt and new shoes... yes, every girl goes crazy for a sharp dressed man.

I recently spent an afternoon with four handsome devils – photographer and fashion blogger Tommy Ton, landscape artist Brook Klausing, Morgan Collett of Saturdays Surf and the dapper auctioneer Alexander Gilkes. Each carefully chosen to represent the effortless style of Mr. B's Gentlemen's Boutique – a new premium footwear collection from ALDO. Here's a few snaps from behind the scenes. You can check out the real deal Holyfield in the September issue of GQ to find out why a sharp dressed man should never wear white socks. And yes, gentlemen do prefer blondes.

Out of Respect

A TRIBUTE TO THE HOMAGE
The simple pleasure of tipping your hat to the great things that came before.

The second issue of L magazine is out. And I couldn't be happier. Perhaps it's the fancy gold cover blinding me with joy. There is no better way to pay homage than fill an issue with impersonators, a tribute to basketball bad ass Ron Artest and local heros with photos of their heros. It's like a house of mirrors inside a bigger house of mirrors. It's like a tribute to the homage. Thanks to everyone who contributed. You're all so awesome and talented. Let's do it again! xo

CONTRIBUTORS Kathryn Borel Jr, Chirs Buck, Jorge Camarotti, Alexandre De Brabant, Simon Duhamel, Markus & Indrani, Evaan Kheraj, Land of Visions, Shayne Laverdiere, Sarah Steinberg, Isa Tousignant and Erin Jarrett Weiss

Lui, Lui

GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS

Over the weekend I spent some time checking out few vintage magazines for inspiration. They just knew what was up back in the day. I was happy to rediscover the French publication Lui, le magazine de l'homme moderne. And I am completely in love with the magazine's super sexy and iconic covers. Here is a selection of my favorites all created around the 1970's. Sadly Lui is no longer it's former glory and stopped regular publication in 1987 but not before Madonna and Brigitte Bardot graced it's cover. C'est le vie.

November Rain

It's November. The sky is a dull grey. And i
n honor of this dark month, let's get cozy and flip through the latest issue of Grey Magazine. Yes, now would be a good time to listen to a little Guns N' Roses.

I first discovered this moody biannual in Melbourne while shopping at the epic Mag Nation (best magazine store EVER). Word on the street is the newest issue came out a few months ago, but I have yet to see it in my hood. Keeping my eyes open for it...

Day Tripper

I love discovering self-published projects. Just recently I spotted this zine entitled Trippin' in Frankie Magazine. So what's it all about? Well, Trippin' is designed and produced by Mark Trzopek, a graphic designer based in Sydney. It's a lovely collection of his photography captured over a 2 year period while on the road.

I have to admit, when I first saw the waterslide photo I got all nostalgic for Splashdown Park in "Sunny" Tsawwassen! Ah, to be a kid again... Okay, who wants to go on a road trip? I've got a convertible, so all we need are cute head scarves, good tunes and a map to warm destinations. All aboard!

The Challengers

Personally I'm not giving up on galaxy collages or orderly photos of the contents of my bag. But if I see another graphic designer holding up a poster I might scream. You know what I'm talking about. Design trends. To follow or not to follow? This is the question asked by the team behind, This Year I Will Try Not To, a cheeky newspaper challenging current design clichés. I can only imagine how interesting an exercise it would have been to identify all the visual tricks designers are collectively exploring these days. What a fun idea.

This year I will break the rules and make a newspaper about it while typesetting my findings in placard condensed – certainly not in helvetica. Dang, that has already been done.

Creative Aggression

MAGAZINE TIME_PATTERNS OF CREATIVE AGGRESSION

There is a magazine for everyone. Just discovered a magazine about the creative process entitled, Patterns of Creative Aggression (roar! grrrrr!). So far there are only 3 issues published and it's not nearly as violent as it sounds. Rather the layout is so fresh and so clean with articles about Jason Crombie of Wooooo Magazine, UK artist Graham Hudson and photos by Justin Guilbert. A lovely publication worth checking out.
