Scrunchies

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / CATHERINE LOSING
. . . .

As a continuation from my last post, this is next level put a scarf on it. Besides, scarves are so 2012 (insert facetious wink). Instead, why not put a scrunchie on it? Now you're talking. Check out this brilliant collaboration between photographer Catherine Losing and set designer Katie Fotis who's love for the 90's and Spice Girls led to a fashion faux pas photo series. Yes, it's an ode to the scrunchie. It's funny and absurd all at the same time. Now where is Elaine Benes when you need her? She really did have a spectacular scrunchie collection to go along with her awesome dance moves.

RT INVENTORY / ALL YOU CAN EAT
. . . .

Food photography has come along way since the dusty 1970's cookbooks we used to have in our family. I remember  frequently flipping through my mom's goliath red checkered cookbook filled with sepia toned candied hams and jello molds. My favourite chapter was of course the sweets. Those maraschino topped sugar cookies always called out to me, "Hey girl, let's do this."

It's been a few years since I've worked on food photography, but I still collect a bunch of wacky conceptual images on my Pinterest moodboard. The more original and crazy, the better. It's how I roll. Nom Nom!

There is nothing more awesome then the combination of commemorative plates and cookies. I would imagine this is what it would be like to have a Trekki meets Royalist grandmother.  Live long and prosper.

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / CSILLA KLENYANSZKI
. . . .

I recently discovered Rotterdam based photographer Csilla Klenyanszki through our mutual love for all things simple and beautiful. It was her bird photo (pictured above) that first caught my eye and lead me to Csilla's artful portfolio. I find her work witty and effortless yet familiar all at once – it's like eating a ham and cheese sandwich upside down... or something like that.

"My inspiration is my house and my environment (it's a kind of kitchen chemistry), that becomes a playground. I try to play with the borders of the nonsense; something that looks foolish at the first place can always find its right place at the end."

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / JASMINE DEPORTA
. . . .

Jasmine Deporta is a 22-year-old photographer based in Italy. She's inspired by youth, colour and dreams.

"I love taking pictures of people who fascinate me. The people in my pictures I mostly find by chance or they are friends of mine. I sometimes see people and I totally fall in love with their faces, personalities and behaviors..."

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / NICO KRIJNO
. . . .

Nico Krijno's body of work feels like a collection of random images found on any Tumblr. His work is direct and intimate. It's at times absurd and minimal. Often shooting his muse and girlfriend, the South African based photographer mostly works with analogue cameras to create some kind of wonderful.  Yes, that is a photo of hotdogs and carrots on a bed of florals. No big deal.

"There’s a thread of love and a sense of humour running through it, though it may sometimes seem cynical and dark. The photos I most enjoy are raw as well as magical, containing a certain dirty realism."

Portrait of a Lady

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY  / MARIELL AMELIE
. . . .

was checking out Base Magazine in between watching Game of Thrones and came across Mariell Amélie's poetic self portrait series from 2006 to 2012. I instantly connected with her work ... in particular the planking shot on the armchair is pretty amazing. Mariell grew up on a small island above the polar circle in Andøya Norway. She now lives and works in London.

"All my images are feelings I've had, feeling I can't always talk about or show in any other way."

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / ALEXANDRA VALENTI
. . . .

Every time I'm in Texas I get a little creative jolt. Whether it's Austin or Marfa – these are magical places. And it's no surprise that Alexandra Valenti calls the lone star state her home. How beautiful are her painted photographs? Her photos have a really entrancing quality to them. I suppose this is why you see bits of her work posted and reposted all over Tumblr.

Sophie takes pictures. You've probably seen her work before on a random Tumblr here and there – which is where I first noticed her photography. For sure any photo with a pineapple or disco ball is tops in my books. Enjoy.

PHOTO OF THE DAY / SUMMER CAMP
. . . .

I've got to say, there is nothing more freaky then going for a walk in the forest and stumbling upon abandoned cabins from summer's past. To top it off there was a cougar watch in the area. Real cougars. Could this all be the makings of a horror film? I was pretty much convinced Jason from Friday the 13th was going to pop out at any moment.  This place is called Moorecroft. It sounds like a town in Middle Earth but it looks more like a deserted set from Meatballs. I had my camera with me and couldn't resist taking a few photos. Crazy, right? So spooky!

Sun City

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / PETER GRANSER
. . . .

I'm loving this series from Peter Granser's book, Sun City featuring awesome senior citizens living it up in Arizona. From Rockette-style dance troops to synchronized swimmers and whimsical lawn flamingos what's not to love? This place is for reals even if it doesn't look so for reals. Retirement... I'm hoping it's not some freaky version of Edward Scissor Hands suburbia meets The Stepford Wives. I guess the moral of this story is let's all get some bikini body T-shirts and rock it today and tomorrow.

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / MAGDALENA WOSINSKA
. . . .

I wish I was as hard core as Magdalena Wosinska. Guitar heros, skater dudes, Jameson and babes are the subjects of her raw and captivating photographs. Oh and she's in a band which sound like Judas Priest and Black Sabbath's offspring. Damn. Here's a cool video about her work and all that jazz (via camerabag.tv). Devil Horns, bitches!

Precious Moments

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / CHARLOTTE BOEYDEN
. . . .

As Montreal thaws you can feel a tiny glimmer of spring under melting piles of dirty snow. Spring isn't so pretty here. It's dull, brown and grey. Yet somehow because the winter is so long, you can't help but find some sort of beauty in it all. Maybe it's just called relief.

There is something about Charlotte Boeyden's quality of light and choice of settings that reminds me of the spring. Her work is a touch melancholic reminiscent of the last month of winter. She captures moments rather than creates them. It's all entirely real.

You know when you've seen a beautiful image online and you've always wanted to know who shot it? Well today is a happy day because I finally found the source of one of my favorite images. Behold Jen Gotch. I've had her balloon image in my bank of "I Heart This" references for ages. What's great is now I've discouver a million more amazeballz images on her site. Yeah for credits!

Das Building

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / MATTHIAS HEIDERICH
. . . .

Last year I was thinking of producing a photo shoot in Berlin, but opted for the magical town of Tofino, British Columbia. While doing my oh so German research, I discovered Matthias Heiderich's photography. Talk about an art director's dream. Oh man! Just look at all the incredible graphic lines and minimalist architecture. I love his use of colour, design and landscape. Since the last time I was in Germany I was 21, I'm due for a visit. Back in the day I was more into beer gardens à la Hofbräuhaus and giant pretzels. This time things would be different. To be honest I'm not 100% I'd give up on the beer. There just might be more of it.  Beer and buildings go so well together.

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / ANDREW B.MYERS (PT.2)
. . . .

I've written about Andrew B. Myers before, but I couldn't resist posting his latest work. I am in love with his lighting and super stylized point of view. Besides, nothing makes me happier than a baby pink seamless and The Bay's iconic blanket print. It's the simple things, I suppose...
