Cut and Paste

CUTTING EDGES
. . . .

Remember the TV show, Reading Rainbow? Sure you do! Consider this blog post my homage to LeVar Burton and public television. We got a bunch of incredible books in our studio the other day. JACKPOT! So I spent the weekend checking out Cutting Edges, the contemporary collage. So. Much. Good. Stuff.  Like Valerie Roybal's  found paper art and Alejandra Villasmil's insanely crazy/cool portraits. Suddenly I have the urge to cut, paste and decoupage. Did someone say craft project? PS how much do we love the cover of this book? Diamonds and triangles! YES!

ART HISTORY So yeah about collage. Back in the day, art movements like Dada, Constructivism and Surrealism really embraced the technique. But get this, word on the street is collage has been around since the invention of paper in China around 200 BC. Yup, it's that old. But the term collage, which is rooted in the french word for glue (aka colle), was first coined by Picasso and Braque in the 20th century. So there you go. Coles Notes.

Two for One

INSPIRATION TIME  / 2 VIDEOS. ONE DIRECTOR.
. . . .

Recently I've been spending some time checking out directors. While discovering new talented peeps like London based director Danny Sangra, I found 2 cool videos and 2 cool artists. Double whammy. I love the pastel colour palette of Lianne La Havas's new video for Forget. I'm a big fan of how they layered images within diamonds... ahem! And it's not just because I only eat Diamond shaped Shreddies. I swear.

Beautifully dark and undeniably British, Baxter Dury's video for Claire reminds me of my past obsession with the group Blur. At the tender age of 19 I was convinced Damon Albarn would indeed marry me. Obviously. Damon, if you're reading this I am still available. Just kidding (wink). In the meantime, enjoy these two music videos.

Das Building

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / MATTHIAS HEIDERICH
. . . .

Last year I was thinking of producing a photo shoot in Berlin, but opted for the magical town of Tofino, British Columbia. While doing my oh so German research, I discovered Matthias Heiderich's photography. Talk about an art director's dream. Oh man! Just look at all the incredible graphic lines and minimalist architecture. I love his use of colour, design and landscape. Since the last time I was in Germany I was 21, I'm due for a visit. Back in the day I was more into beer gardens à la Hofbräuhaus and giant pretzels. This time things would be different. To be honest I'm not 100% I'd give up on the beer. There just might be more of it.  Beer and buildings go so well together.

TERRARIUM LOVE
. . . .

Ever since my BFF, Erika introduced me to Score & Solder's most radical terrariums sold at Vancouver's Old Faithful Shop, I have had nothing but plants on my mind. Yes, I officially have a tete de chou. My current obsession is to find the perfect terrarium for my mini apartment. Consider it a moss and fern homage to Lynn Valley. In reality I should just opt for an air plant so I don't kill it with kindness. Even though I'm still on an epic terrarium quest, I adore these four globed ecosystems. Too CUTE!

RT INVENTORY / TROPICAL
. . . .

I'm feelin' a little fruity. Spring is right around the corner and we'll be living it up Blue Hawaii styles in no time. I have to admit, it's one big fruit salad these days with nothing but pineapples, juicy citrus and botanicals popping up everywhere. I love hunting for trends. Lucky for me a large part of my job is to source what's cool. Which is why I'm launching a new post for RT. Introducing Inventory – much like my colour study posts, but with a little something-something. Today, its a curated mood board of tropical style, photography and design. Check out my top ten picks perfect for any humid day. Sunscreen optional.

Spa Day

SPA DAY
. . . .

Baby it's cold outside. This weekend it's all about a spa day in the comfort of my Montreal apartment. There's not a chance I'm venturing out. Instead, I've collected my favorite products to bring a little warmth to the winter. I picked up Aesop skincare while I was in Australia a few years ago and every time I slather on my mandarin face cream it's like I'm suntanning at Bondi. Well almost. A girl can try, right? To bring a little more hot tropic to the mix, I love love love my Korres guava shower gel and jasmine body butter – nothing smells as delicious. Ages ago, when I was living in Vancouver, I discovered these incredible Japanese bath salts that actually smell like a cedar forest. It always reminds me of home. All I need is a rain shower head and I'm suddenly transported to the salty west. Treat yo self!

Keep It Simple / part two

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / ANDREW B.MYERS (PT.2)
. . . .

I've written about Andrew B. Myers before, but I couldn't resist posting his latest work. I am in love with his lighting and super stylized point of view. Besides, nothing makes me happier than a baby pink seamless and The Bay's iconic blanket print. It's the simple things, I suppose...
