Sun City

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / PETER GRANSER
. . . .

I'm loving this series from Peter Granser's book, Sun City featuring awesome senior citizens living it up in Arizona. From Rockette-style dance troops to synchronized swimmers and whimsical lawn flamingos what's not to love? This place is for reals even if it doesn't look so for reals. Retirement... I'm hoping it's not some freaky version of Edward Scissor Hands suburbia meets The Stepford Wives. I guess the moral of this story is let's all get some bikini body T-shirts and rock it today and tomorrow.

J'aime Rodarte

MAGAZINE TIME / A MAGAZINE CURATED BY RODARTE
. . . .

It only took something crazy like 5 months for me to get my hands on A Magazine Curated by Rodarte. Oh, Canada... it's as if I live in Ittoqqortoormitt.  Favorites from the magazine's pages have to be the Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst editorials, the hilarious Garbage Pail Kids (yes, I used to collect them all) and the whack attack stills from the Wizard of Oz, Jaws and a few random zombie movies. Printed on uncoated paper stock with an embossed cover equals design heaven. So for those who didn't get to check out this beautiful magazine, here's a few tid bits to enjoy.

. . . .
Californian designers Kate & Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte weave a vibrant tapestry of natural and built environments, featuring inspiring landscapes and the characters that inhabit those worlds – with artistic contributions from contemporary talents such as Jay DeFeo, John Baldessari and Joss Whedon. The issue includes two exclusively commissioned editorials, featuring Kirsten Dunst in their FW/11 collection photographed by David Armstrong and Elle Fanning in their SS/ 12 couture collection photographed by Bill Owens.

Rebel Yell

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / MAGDALENA WOSINSKA
. . . .

I wish I was as hard core as Magdalena Wosinska. Guitar heros, skater dudes, Jameson and babes are the subjects of her raw and captivating photographs. Oh and she's in a band which sound like Judas Priest and Black Sabbath's offspring. Damn. Here's a cool video about her work and all that jazz (via camerabag.tv). Devil Horns, bitches!

Disco Disco

STYLE STYLE  / BIANCA JAGGER
. . . .

Can we just for a second give a shout out to Bianca Jagger and her radical style? No one can rock a white YSL tuxedo like she can. For sure the topic of Bianca's style has been written about, blogged and re-blogged a million times, but being a child of the 70's it's close to my heart. You see, when I was born I narrowly missed the chance to be named after this Disco Disco icon. It wasn't until I was much older that I realized how incredibly cool Bianca is. I remember my first vinyl was the Rolling Stone's Tattoo You and not quite getting it because I was still rocking to Raffi. You know, sometimes it takes a little time to appreciate the impossible cool. Big ups for Studio 54 vibes and soft androgyny.

PS Totally going to ride on a horse into my next birthday bash à la Bianca styles. EPIC!

Precious Moments

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE DAY / CHARLOTTE BOEYDEN
. . . .

As Montreal thaws you can feel a tiny glimmer of spring under melting piles of dirty snow. Spring isn't so pretty here. It's dull, brown and grey. Yet somehow because the winter is so long, you can't help but find some sort of beauty in it all. Maybe it's just called relief.

There is something about Charlotte Boeyden's quality of light and choice of settings that reminds me of the spring. Her work is a touch melancholic reminiscent of the last month of winter. She captures moments rather than creates them. It's all entirely real.

Pop Tarts

INSPIRATION TIME / EMILIE DE GRIOTTES
. . . .

Yes it's true. Whenever I eat deserts, I make sure they're the right shade of Pantone. I mean, don't all designers do the same? I was checking out Creative Review this morning and I came across Emilie de Griottes' Pantone Tarts. Love this! If you're so inspired, you can make these colourful treats at home. Check out the culinary magazine Fricote for more nom noms.

Colour Blocked

RT INVENTORY / GEOMETRIC
. . . .

Let's call today's Inventory, Composition in Rainbow – a technicolor homage to the master of colour blocking, MondrianSince my good ol' art history days I've always been a sucker for the abstract.  I say bring on Damien Hirst's polka dots and Barnett Newman's colour fields. High fives for minimal simplicity and graphic prints. Here's just a snippet of my favorite artists and illustrators spreading geometric love.
